Kevin Carr Hopes to Lead a Cast of Veterans to a Championship Season
Eight returners look to repeat as YSCC Champs
Two time USCAA All American Kevin Carr (6'2"/Westminster, MD) will lead eight other veteran players on a quest to repeat as the YSCC regular season champion and earn a coveted berth in the USCAA National Championship Tournament. Carr will anchor a backcourt that will also feature junior Alex Tyrrell (6'3"/Sydney, Australia), sophomore Tony Louie (6'2"/Inchelium, WA) and senior John Robinson (5'9"/Queens, NY). "Many of the YSCC coaches have told me that Kevin may be the best player we've seen in the conference. I agree. He can do everything. What most folks don't realize is that, besides being a 20+ per game scorer, he is our best defender. This should be a special senior year for Kevin Carr."
"We're certainly strong in the backcourt," commented Coach John Dyer. Alex Tyrrell didn't get enough credit last year for his contributions to our ball club. He was steady and dependable all year long." Tyrrell averaged 9.6 ppg, 6 assists and was among the nation's leaders in free throw percentage. Alex won the free throw competition at the USCAA National Tournament. "The best thing about Alex, says Coach Dyer," is that he rarely ever turns the ball over. He had one of the best assist to turnover ratios in the country." John Robinson will enter his fourth season. "John can turn a game around, "commented Dyer. "He is really tough to guard—maybe our toughest one on one match up." Tony Louie served as Kevin Carr's understudy—and played virtually every other position on the floor except low post. "Tony is our utility fielder, he does anything and everything we ask him to do. He is the fastest player on the team and one of our lock down defenders. By the end of the season, Tony's confidence was growing and he began looking for his shots. He has a huge upside to his game and he'll be a major contributor to this year's team." Two sport athlete Nick Vorvis (Nick is the catcher on the baseball team) rounds out the backcourt veterans.
NiikAwei ("Kwei") General-Vanderpuije (6'4") played the entire season last year out of position. "Kwei is actually a guard," claims Coach Dyer. "Last season we had very little depth in the front court, so Kwei spent most of his minutes at power forward. This year he'll spend more time on the perimeter enabling him to drive to the basket. Watch out. Kwei is a scorer."
Josh Lindsey (6'6"/Palm Bay, FL) had a solid, consistent season in the low post last year. "I think Josh is capable of a double-double every time out," added Coach Dyer. "He has great footwork, he can shoot from distance and he improved steadily throughout the year at clearing the boards. If Josh can stay out of foul trouble, he'll put up some really good numbers this season."
Two solid players will return to the team after a year off. Power forward Eko N'Bouke (6'0/Lima, Togo) will be welcomed with open arms. Eko injured his knee after playing in the Pan African games for his native country. He had surgery prior to last year's season and did not recover until after the season. "Eko is a force, says Coach Dyer. "At the conclusion of the 2009-10 season, he had three consecutive 20 rebound games. If he's healthy, he can be a game changer." Sharp shooter Cody Chamberlin (6'3"/Northfield, VT) returns to Vermont Tech after taking a year off from school. "Cody can flat out score and he has tremendous versatility on the court. Cody's a great guy to have on a team. He's completely unselfish. Cody has worked hard in the gym and has added a great deal of muscle. He's going to help us big-time.
The returning players would make a pretty solid team in and of themselves. However, this year's recruiting class will add nine new faces, all of whom will be competing for time on the 2011-12 team. Coach Dyer, now in his 9th season, summed up his view of this year's team: "we have more depth than I think we have ever had before—getting everyone playing time will be a challenge—it's a nice problem to have.
