Stellar Defense Leads Knights to Victory Over Saints
Vermont Tech Men's Basketball team opened their home schedule on Tuesday night with a win against YSCC opponent College of St. Joseph's 68-54. The men held the Saints to 23 percent shooting from the field.
The game began with a 6-0 run from the Knights, as their defensive intensity led to transition baskets. This would not startled the seasoned Saints team as they battled back and forth with the men for the majority of the half. With 6 minutes to go the Knights had a 23-21 lead. Patient offense and stellar defense saw the home team close the half on a 12-2 run, and go into the break with a 35-23 lead.
The Saints would go on a run of their own in the second half, and an Antonio Gordon 3 saw them with one point with 12 minutes remaining. The story of the game was the Knights defense though, which keep the two 2 points in the following six minutes, and gave the men a comfortable 68-54 victory.
Head Coach Alex Tyrrell praised his team performance against the Saints.
"St. Joe's have been the standard in the league for the last few years", said Coach Tyrrell. "They have been to the National Tournament they last two years and returned a nice core from those groups. We showed great growth tonight in the consistency to which we play our style of basketball".
Deitric Grant continued his assault on the boards finishing with 22 rebounds and 19 points, which Robert Holiday added 17 points and 9 rebounds. Lewis Holey gave the Knights great production off the bench scoring 12 points in the second half.
The Knights travel to SUNY Delhi this weekend to face the Broncos on Saturday and U. Maine Fort-Kent on Sunday.
