Women's Soccer Drops Opener to UMPI
2011 YSCC All-Conference Recipient Lockerby Scores 2
(RANDOLPH CENTER, VT) -- In the first contest of 2012 for both teams, the University of Maine Presque-Isle Owl bested the Knights of Vermont Tech by a final of 7-2. Despite playing on their home field, the Knights fell behind early to the Owls, and were never able to recover.
Although Audra Kirk (So./Limestone, ME) scored first goal at 10:33, Lainey Herring (Sr./Houlton, ME) scored three times to lead the University of Maine-Presque Isle women's soccer team victory at Vermont Tech Saturday afternoon. The win was the inaugural for first year UMPI head coach Trevor Parent.
In her first collegiate soccer game, Goalie Elise Coolbeth (So./Wolcott, VT) did her best to keep the Knights close, but it was to no avail. Coolbeth made 14 saves on 21 shots on goal, 28 shots overall for the Owls. Vermont Tech attempted 9 total shots, 8 being on goal.
The score was 1-0 after the Kirk goal, and then Herring began her scoring for the day, sandwiching her two goals around one by Kallie Pelletier (So./Madawaska, ME). UMPI led 4-0 with seven minutes remaining in the first half.
After the Knights got on the board with a Ashley Lockerby (Sr./Enosburg, VT) left-footed unassisted goal, Chelsea Lynds-Beaulieu (So./Presque Isle, ME) found the back of the net and again gave UMPI a 4 goal lead with only a minute remaining in the half.
Lockerby opened the scoring in the second half at 57:41, assisted by Alysha Jones (Fr./Morrisvile, VT) to bring the Knights to within 3. Herring answered one more time for UMPI only a few minutes later, and the Owls made the final margin of victory 5 with a goal at 71:02.
The Knights are now 0-1, 0-0 on the season, while UMPI is 1-0, 0-0. Vermont Tech next faces NCAA Division III in-state foe Lyndon State on the road. The match takes place Thursday, September 6 at 4pm.
