MEN'S BASKETBALL TITLE HOPES END WITH LOSS TO KENT ST.
Vermont State Randolph opened play in pursuit of the USCAA Division II National Championship Tournament on March 3 at the Flickenger Center, falling to Kent State Tuscarawas 82 to 71.
Randolph showed energy early and competed throughout the contest, but Tuscarawas used its physical presence and rebounding advantage to control key stretches of the game. The visitors consistently attacked the paint and created second chance opportunities, which allowed them to maintain momentum and limit Randolph's ability to close the gap.
As a team, Tuscarawas shot 44.3 percent from the field and knocked down 13 of 17 free throws. Their effort on the boards, especially the 17 offensive rebounds, helped create second chance opportunities and keep the pressure on Randolph throughout the game.
Randolph was led by Jaylon Calvin who delivered a strong all around performance with 26 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and four steals while playing all 40 minutes. TJ Wilson provided a spark off the bench with nine points, including two three pointers, and Nate Decker added six points in limited minutes.
Randolph finished the game with nine steals and 12 assists, showing defensive activity and ball movement. However, the rebounding difference proved to be the deciding factor as Tuscarawas finished with a 53 to 33 advantage on the boards.
Despite the result, Randolph's effort and resilience remained evident as the team continues its pursuit in the national tournament field.
