Vermont Tech ties St. Joseph's
VTC Men were disappointed with the result against College of St Joseph last Wednesday. Despite a valiant effort to come from behind and tie the game with 5 minutes left from 2-0 down, then to go ahead and score a third goal to put the Green Knights in the lead with 3 minutes remaining. St Joe’s was able to equalize with 85 seconds left on the clock to come up with the tie.
Playing on a waterlogged mud bog of a field, VTC was able to dominate St. Joe’s for most of the match, particularly the second half. The team was unable to score until the 78th minute when Matt Golden volleyed in a rebound from close range. Minutes later Senior Captain Daren Rivard was able to capitalize on a penalty kick to tie the game. The final 10 minutes of regulation was dominated by Rivard dribbling up the center of the pitch, threatening goal every time. Finally with 5 minutes remaining Rivard was able to get the ball across the line with a great individual effort. That put the Green Knights in the lead for the first time. Unfortunately, the defense was unable to keep St. Joe’s out of the area, and an awkward chip found its way into the net, tying the game. 20 Minutes of overtime couldn’t break the deadlock, so the game ended at 3-3.
VTC takes on the mighty Maine teams this coming weekend, with UM Presque Isle and UM Fort Kent coming the VTC Soccer Stadium Saturday and Sunday.
