Knights Defeat Fighting Saints of St. Joe's (VT)
Baker Scores 18 in the Win
Randolph Center, VT - In a tightly fought defensive contest where every basket was at an absolute premium, the Lady Knights of Vermont Tech were victorious over the Fighting Saints of the College of St. Joe's (VT) 41-34.
The game was one of extreme importance in the Yankee Small College Conference Western Division, as the teams came into the contest ranked second and third. With the win, VTC is now 5-4 in the YSCC, 8-11 overall, while the Saints are 3-6, 5-9.
The first half saw some stellar defense and suspect offense from both sides. The teams struggled to score, making every bucket seem like several. Ama Baker (So./Fitchburg, MA) led all scorers at the half with 8, on way to her game-high 18. She was also clutch from the free throw line, hitting on 8 of 12. Even with Baker's effort, the score at half was only 17-13 in favor of VTC. The teams shot just 20% from the field in the half, and Paige Wells (So./Orleans, VT) used the poor shooting performance to grab 9 of her game-high 12 rebounds in the half. Shaionica Speight of St. Joe's tied Wells for the game, also grabbing 12 rebounds.
As the second half began, both teams again locked down on defense and neither was able to break out of their scoring slump. At 10:16 to go, the Knights clung to a 1 point lead thanks to a put-back jumper by Freshman Serena Reynolds (Alburgh, VT). The score was 27-26. Wells then went on a scoring run of her own, scoring 6 of the next 8points and putting the Lady Knights up by 8. That was all the cushion the Knights needed, leading the rest of the way with the final margin being 7.
For St. Joe's Kelly Festa grabbed a double-double, 13 points and 10 rebounds.
The Ladies have the entire week to savor their victory, as their next contest will take place at home against non-conference opponent Pine Manor College on Saturday, February 2nd. The Gators defeated the Knights in their first contest of the season. Game time is set for 100pm.
