Lady Knights Take Down the Moose
Vellek Lead All Scorers with 28
South Portland, ME - Playing on the neutral court of Southern Maine Community College, the Lady Knights were able to triumph in a tight one over the Moose of the University of Maine-Augusta. The conference win pushes the Knights to a 4-4 record in the YSCC West, while the Moose drop to 6-5 in the YSCC East.
In a scrappy, low-scoring contest the Lady Knights of Vermont Tech proved to be the tougher team when faced with Maine-Augusta. Senior Kelly Vellek (Burlington, VT) put the team on her back throughout the game, not allowing the team to even think about a loss. Vellek scored a game-high 28 points on 50% shooting, scoring 18 of the team's 23 second half points. She also garnered a double-double, as she grabbed 12 rebounds.
Although the shots were not always falling, the defense of the Knights locked down the Moose. In the first half UMA only scored 16 points on 25% shooting from the field. VTC, however, was not able to fully take advantage of their defense, as they were only able to muster 21 points in the half.
The second half went much as the first, with scoring at an absolute premium. While Vellek was hitting shots, Arreonte Lee was attempting to do the same for the Moose. Lee did her best to keep the home team in the game, eventually finishing with a team-high 26. The Knights, however, were always one step ahead. The UMA 2-3 zone slowed the pace of the game, but with Vellek hitting on 5 of 10 from beyond the three point line, there was little UMA could do.
After a Haley Madore layup brought the game to within 2 with just under 5 minutes remaining, Vellek drilled a three pointerand then the Knight defense took over the game. Paige Wells (So./Orleans, VT) hit on a jumper with under a minute to go to solidify the final margin of victory at 7, 44-37.
Wells was second on VTC in scoring with 7 to go with her 8 rebounds. Although not having her best shooting day, Ama Baker (Jr./Fitchburg, MA) filled her stat sheet with 5 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals. Alyssa Cassenelli (So./Barkhamsted, CT) was second on the team in rebounds, pulling down 7.
Madore had 8 points for UMA, while Tiffany Fraser and Corinne Dingley both ended with 10 rebounds.
