Randolph Center, VT - In a contest where the home team led by 13 at the halftime break, the Lady Knights were able to stave off a furious comeback to defeat the Fisher Falcons by the final of 59-57.
Kelly Vellek (Sr./Burlington, VT) came out hot in the first half, hitting on 5-10 overall and 3-5 from 3, using her 14 points to give the Knights an early lead. The Lady Knights were ahead by 13 at the break, 33-20.
Things tightened up in the second half, as the Falcons began to hit their shots and the Knights struggled to find the bottom of the hoop. Fisher slowly chipped away at the lead of the Knights, and at the 4:52 mark it was just a one-point game, 52-51 in favor of VTC. Shortly thereafter Javanna Bernard hit two free throws to actually put the Falcons up 1, followed by Porsha Grayson hitting on one of two free throws to make it 54-52 to the visitors.
At just 2:14 left in the game, Ama Baker (Fr./Fitchburg, MA) made one of two free throws, followed closely by a jumper to put the Knights up 1. Wells then drove hard along the baseline, was followed by Shakieya Roland-Drake and calmly sunk two free throws to make it 57-54 for the home team.
After a Bernard three from deep tied the game with only :40 remaining, the Falcons fouled Senior Vellek who stepped to the line for two free throws. With only :20 left in the contest, she hit on both, giving the Knights a two-point lead. Fisher had several chances in the final seconds, included a play from underneath their own basket, but the Knights' defense was too good and the home team won 59-57.
Baker finished with 13 points, 7 assists and 4 steals.
For Fisher, Bernard led the scoring with 27 points, including 6-9 from 3. Sabrina Rubaud was second with 14 points, while also grabbing 8 rebounds.
