Vermont Tech Season Ends in the National Semi's
Uniontown, Pa: After being down 13 at half, the Vermont Tech men's basketball team made a furious comeback to take the lead in the second. After the strong rally, the Knights ran out of gas and lost a heartbreaker in the National Semi-finals to Penn State Greater Allegheny 76-72.
The Knights got off to a slow start against the Lions, shooting 39% from the field and 22% from 3. PSGA shot 42% from behind the arc. A late boost by the Lions gave them a 49-36 lead going into half. The Green Knights came out of half clicking on all cylinders and made a 20-4 run to take a 3 point lead off of layup by Drake Perry. VTC looked to have control of the game but the Lions from PSGA hit 2 big layups to get it back even. After a back and forth battle in the last 8 minutes, PSGA hit a layup off of a loose ball with 24.2 seconds to go. The Knights had a chance to tie but the shot fell short. The Lions converted on 2 free throws to win the game and clinch a spot in the national title game. Drake Perry led the Knights with 17 and Trekel Douglas added 15 including 2 big second half 3's. Chance Cole and Jeremiah Shaw each had 13 points.
The Knights finishes the year 24-9.
Coach Jamal Hughes: "Tough way to end the season and falling short of a chance to play in the big game is painful. I'm proud of all of my guys and the way they battled. We had our chances down the stretch and the ball just didn't bounce our way tonight. We made it to the national semis, and we should be proud. Thanks for the support from our school, community, parents etc. It really was a special year and now I'm looking forward to seeing some of my guys walk across the stage in May."
