Green Knights Strike Gold
Junior Matt Golden scores hat trick to secure victory for VTC Men
First Junior Matt Golden (Lisbon, NH) tied the game between the Vermont Tech Green Knights and the College of St. Joseph's (VT) on a penalty kick, his second goal of the game, then he put the team up 3-2 with 2:01 left in the game on a beautiful left footed strike from outside the 18'. Shocked from losing a 2-1 lead they had held for much of the game, and with only two minutes remaining the Saints could not mount a comeback. The win marks the first overall and conference win of the young season for the VTC Men.
Golden was all the offense VTC needed today, as he opened the scoring at 33:36 in the first half to put the Knights up 1-0. The Saints countered, tying the game as the two teams broke for halftime. The Saints then captured a 2-1 lead early in the second half, scoring in under a minute. The Knights, however, would not be denied. At the 13:45 mark, the Saints #13, a defender, was issued a red card and eliminated from the game for obstruction with a direct goal as he deliberately laid down and grasped the ball with his hands as it was rolling into the net. His actions resulted in a penalty kick, which Golden calmly knocked into the back of the net, tying the game at 2.
Vermont Tech is now 1-3, 1-1 YSCC, while St. Joe's is 0-2, 0-2 YSCC. St. Joe's next plays at SUNY Adirondack on Sunday, September 11. VTC has a home match the same day, vs Paul Smith's College at 3pm.
