Knights Handle Hampshire College
Score three goals in second half to win 4-3
Despite being without their leading goal scorer, Junior Matt Golden (Lisbon, NH), the Vermont Tech Green Knights were able to hold off a hard charging Hampshire College in the second half to capture a much needed 4-3 victory.
VTC garnered the first goal of the day with a beautiful run by Junior Hannes Fisher-Byrne (Strafford, VT). Fisher-Byrne simply out ran his defender to put the Knights up at the 37:10 mark of the first half. Hampshire, however, would not be deterred as they answered with a score of their own about seven minutes later at 29:31. Ten minutes passed before Hampshire struck again, connecting on an erratically bouncing ball to give them the lead 2-1. The score remained tied at two as the two teams took to the halftime break.
The second half began with a flurry, as Freshman Daniel Mujica (Caracas, Venezuela) netted the game tying goal only nine minutes into the half. Fisher-Byrne then scored his second goal of the game only five minutes later, at 36:17, giving the Knights a 3-2 advantage. Hampshire was not one to take these goals lightly, as they continually attacked on offensive, while their goalie was kept busy saving fifteen shots. The stellar goal tending and offensive attack eventually paid off, as Hampshire knotted the game again, this time at 3, at the 32:44 mark of the second period. After the visitors scored the goal, Mujica and Fisher-Byrne went back to work on the offensive side of the ball. Along with Sophomore Midfielder Brian Cole (Wallingford, VT), the trio attempted 21 shots, contributing all but three of the total on the day for the Knights. Mujica was the one to finally break the tie, scoring his second goal of the contest at 24:07 to make the ultimate tally in the game 4-3 VTC.
The loss drops Hampshire to 0-3, 0-3 on the season, while the Knights are now 3-6, 3-3. VTC next takes on the University of Maine at Fort Kent in a home contest at 4pm on Thursday, September 29.
