Green Knight Men Shutout by UMaine Machias
Physical play and sloppy conditions highlight the match
A mud pit for a field, physical play resulting in two yellow cards and a lackluster offensive output for Vermont Tech highlighted the match on Sunday, October 2 versus the University of Maine at Machias. VTC's home field was complete mud thanks to heavy rains and several games being played over the course of the previous four days. Both teams struggled to keep their footing and no one went home without a brown mud covered jersey.
Freshman Franck Zeba (Lexington Park, MD) scored the first two goals of the game for Machias, connecting on the first at 29:37 and the second by way of a header on a corner kick at 19:30. Those goals, plus one by Junior Kris Wignes (Vancourver, BC) at 2:13, came in the first half and were all the offense the Clippers needed to earn the 3-0 victory. The game was physical from the start, with both teams vehemnetly fighting for possession of every ball, throwing their bodies around and not caring about the condition of the field or how dirty they were getting in the process. As the second half wore on things grew chippy, with two Machias players earning a yellow card only minutes apart from one another.
Junior Zach Fortuna (Ludlow, VT) played well in goal, saving 10 of 16 shots on goal, but between the mud and the Clipper defense the Green Knights could simply not muster a solid offensive attack. VTC finished the day with just 3 shots on goal.
Machias is now 9-4 on the year and next play the derfending National Champion University of Maine Fort Kent on October 4. Vermont Tech falls to 3-8 and will next hit the road for a non-conference match-up against Fisher College on Wednesday, October 5 at 7pm.
