Roos Upend Knights in VTC Home Finale
Early goal propels visitors to 2-0 victory
A goal at the 41st minute of the first half, just four minutes into the game, was all that was needed as SUNY Canton defeated the Knights of Vermont Tech in Randolph Center. The Roos were energized to start the game and jumped on the home team quickly, with all of the action in the end of Vermont Tech. SUNY added an insurance goal in the first half to spoil the home finale of the Knights by a 2-0 margin.
Conditions played a large role in the game, as the field was muddy and slippery from the previous day's rain, the occasional light shower of the afternoon and the fact the women had played directly before the men. In addition, the wind kicked up with gusts in excess of 30mph that simply wreaked havoc on all long balls. Both goalies had a difficult time punting as the wind blew diagonally across the field. There was a distinct advantage of playing with, as opposed to against, the wind and the Roos used it to score their two goals in the first half. Vermont Tech attempted to do the same in the second, with the action taking place much more in the Roos end, but they could just not quite get any quality shots off on goal.
Freshman Eric Lopez (Holbrook, NY) and Sophomore Leroy White (Brooklyn, NY) had the goals for the Roos, while Freshman Daniel Mujica (Caracas, Venezuela) led the Knights with 5 shots on goal. Junior Goalie Zach Fortuna (Ludlow, VT) had 8 saves.
The win brings the record of SUNY Canton to 11-6-2 and Vermont Tech's to 4-11-1. SUNY Canton next plays the University of Maine Fort Kent at home on October 22nd, while Vermont Tech will enter the YSCC Playoffs versus NHTI in the Divisional round for the East. The game will take place at NHTI on Tuesday October 18th at 3:45pm.
NHTI holds a 2-0 advantage this season over the Knights, but both games were highly competitive. The Knights lost to the Lynx 2-0 in Concord, NH in early season action on September 7th, and were defeated in a tight game by a final of 3-2 in Randolph Center on September 21st. The winner of the contest will advance to play in the YSCC Final Four that begins on Saturday, October 22nd.
